    Washington, D.C. (Mar. 26) – The election of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Ph.D., as the new director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), and his bold assertion that health is a human right to be upheld through universal health coverage, is being hailed by the ACTION global health advocacy partnership as the kind of leadership the organization and the world need to remove barriers to care and advance human development and global prosperity. A former Ethiopian health and foreign minister, Dr. Ghebreyesus is the first African chosen to head the 69-year-old organization. He was elected by the member states of the WHO at a meeting in Geneva, May 23.

(May 26) – ACTION global health advocacy partnership is calling on G7 leaders to invest more in efforts to eradicate tuberculosis (TB) and polio, end malnutrition, and promote universal health coverage. Citing diseases of poverty, lack of proper nutrients—particularly in the first 1000 days of life—and the inability to access proper healthcare by the world’s poorest people, as the greatest barriers to human development and global prosperity, the group is demanding action from the leaders of the world’s largest economies, meeting in Taormina, Italy, May 26–27.

    Momentum grows among advocates to end tuberculosis

    Washington, D.C. (March 24) – World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, observed March 24th each year, comes with growing momentum among advocates to eradicate an ancient disease that continues to impact millions of people throughout the world. Alarmed by a steady rise in cases of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB; including multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), advocates have become more targeted in their calls for greater investment in research that will lead to less toxic drugs, modern diagnostic tools, and shorter treatment regimens for people who contract the disease. These efforts are beginning to draw responses.

    ACTION calls on G20 leaders to prioritize TB

    Washington, D. C. (March 16) – ACTION joins 84 organizations and 112 individuals in calling on G20 leaders to prioritize tuberculosis (TB) at the upcoming Summit in July where the G20 will discuss steps to address the global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The open letter, which asks G20 leaders to support a mechanism to fast-track the development of a new anti-TB treatment regimen, provides an opportunity to take collective action against the world’s only drug-resistant infection spread through the air.

(Mar. 10) – ACTION has joined other leading health organizations calling for tuberculosis (TB) to be added to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) list of high priority drug-resistant bacteria. The call comes in the wake of WHO’s "first ever list of antibiotic-resistant pathogen, as part of the efforts to address the growing global resistance to antimicrobial medicine."

    ACTION trains global media champions to fight tuberculosis

    Washington, D.C. (Feb. 16) – ACTION, in a bid to end one of the world’s oldest and most infectious diseases, hosted its latest media champion training for tuberculosis (TB) survivors, advocates, and researchers in Paris, France, February 1 - 4. Accommodating 10 participants from 9 countries, the training, in its 11th year, sought to deepen and broaden the advocacy group’s effort to promote investment in TB research and treatment, and ultimately, to help eliminate the disease by 2030, the goal set by the World Health Organization.

    Historic commitment from African heads of state to advance immunization in Africa

    Addis Ababa (Jan. 31) – Heads of State from across Africa, today, endorsed the Addis Declaration on Immunization (ADI) also known as the Ministerial Declaration on Universal Access to Immunization, a historic and timely pledge to ensure that everyone in Africa – regardless of who they are or where they live – receives the full benefits of immunization. The endorsement was issued during the 28th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
